I’ve taken a hiatus on maintaining my site and adding new content, up until recently (as you may have been able to tell). So, needless to say there were necessary updates to install on almost all of my plugins, the WordPress platform itself (I was on v 2.X!) and… of course, the theme. The last time I bothered to do any coding on my theme, there was no such thing as child themes so, of course, whatever customizations I wanted had to be hacked into the php and HTML code on the actual theme pages which meant that when I went to update my theme, some things were lost. I kept a log of the changes I made initially so that was OK. But there were also all of my header images and logo that were replaced with the theme’s default images upon updating.
Luckily though, that’s where my site host Godaddy came in! Godaddy rocks becuase they automatically backup your site’s content on a daily basis and save it for 30 days back. And it’s so easy to conduct a restore, it’s just a few clicks away! You can restore single files or whole directories at a time. For as long as Godaddy keeps providing this service and the other things I love about them I will never switch hosting companies. I have had to use the restore feature on quite a few occasions, and without it I would really have been up the proverbial creek!
If you use Godaddy as your host and didn’t know this existed so you want to check it out, or if you need to restore some files here’s how:
- Log into your Godaddy Dashboard and launch the Control center for your Hosting Account.
- From your Hosting Dashboard, click on “Files” to go to the File Manager
- In the header row, left hand side above the file navigation bar, click on “History”. Use the Calendar in the beige nav bar near the top to choose a date to restore files to a specific date in the last 30 days (when you click on History it chooses yesterday’s date as a default)
- Find the file or directory you want to restore, check the box and click on “Restore” then put in your options and follow the prompts. Voila! Your file(s) will immediately update on your current site!
NOTE: You will notice when in your File Manager browsing the history, there’s a column for “Status” on the right hand side which will even show you if the same file is currently being used on your site or if it was deleted, or a different file with the same name! It takes all the guesswork out of it.
